Vacation Day--2

We woke up Friday morning to news reports of the tsunami hitting California.  We sat glued to the TV.  We watched a local new station and they had news crews at Venice Beach and a helicopter in the air.  It was interesting to watch the tsunami come in.  The water got rougher and then you could see the water level drop.  About a hundered yards out where the ocean normally is was all uncovered.  There were some idiots out there collecting sea shells and stuff.  Stupid.  Then the water slowly started to come back in and the water level began to rise back to normal.  So, there wasn't a huge wave that came in, but it was still interesting to see the water change.

We had no idea what we were going to do, so we decided to head to the airport and decide from there.  While at the airport we were trying to figure out if we should go or not.  Casey was worried that if there were aftershocks that there could be another tsunami.  We started looking at some other options.  #1 go home.  Flights were full til Saturday.  #2 Drive up the coast and fly out of Seattle.  Rental car $400.  #3 Drive home.  Rental car $300.  #4 Drive to Vegas, stay for a few days then fly home from there.  A fairly good option, not too expensive.  #5 Have Casey's mom fly Caleb to us and we would drive to San Diego and go to Sea World.  If we wouldn't have flown out on Thursday we probably would have just ended up going to Sea World.  #6 Go to Puero Vallarta.  We didn't have our passports.  Lesson learned-always bring our passports so that we have more options.

While trying to come up with some kind of a decision they announced that our flight was delayed until 4:00 because of a mechanical problem.  This made Casey even more nervous about going to Hawaii.  The longer we sat there the more we thought that we should just go to Hawaii.  It was going to cost us just as much to do anything else, so we might as well stick to our original plan.  I called the hotel that we were going to be staying at and they said that life on the island was normal and the hotel was up and running as usual.  Because of the tsunami, it opened up more seats on the flight so were would definately be able to get on the flight.

We had a 5 1/2 hour flight, landed in Kauai, rented our car, drove to our hotel and checked in.  We were exhausted from the day so we just went to bed, but so glad to be there.
